Considering all the viral attention given to Drew Carey over his support of striking writers, it kind of sucks that The Drew Carey Show isn’t streaming anywhere, except the first season

In fact, only the first season was ever released on DVD, too, due to music rights. Which sucks bc if you never saw it, or don’t remember it, The Drew Carey Show was not some Home Improvement esque stand-up sitcom hackjob. It was a proto-Community prone to surreal gimmicks and wacky special episodes. These included “spot the mistakes!” episodes and improvisational crossovers with Whose Line, but also “after an office prank, Drew wakes up in China” (filmed on location in China), “Rocky Horror vs Priscilla Queen of the Desert drag danceoff musical number”, and “the gang descends into a science lab to save a dog & come across mutants and strange experiments”. It seemed weirder than something like Community though bc it was rooted so heavily in mundane 90s blue collar workcom aesthetics, then it would reveal the guy-of-the-week the female lead was dating was literally the Devil

Anyway the only way to watch anything but the first season is piracy, and likely always will be. Fun!

Drew Carey just straight up loved any excuse for a musical number and it was a delight.

This is a man who gave his show three different theme songs, did full-length music videos for them, and then in the final season brought back all three themes, with a different version each time. The dude absolutely loved his musical numbers

This is the most jubilantly anyone has ever said “OHIO!”

It’s on REW-TV, free, over-the-air tv. Get a cheap antenna and get into the world of the phony channels. Check out their list of affiliates here.

Environmental sustainability is such a turn on

Europe had a similar technique called “coppicing” (where you encourage new trees to grow out of old stumps) but didn’t do the pruning, so the resulting trees aren’t as straight and have knots.

image

And then there is pollarding (another ancient European technique), which is when you cut off the upper branches of a tree to promote the growth of a dense head of foliage and branches:

image

I would not be surprised if other cultures also had similar techniques, although the Japanese version seems on casual glance to have higher-quality results than the European version.

The problem isn’t that nobody had ever thought of something like this before. The problem is that industrialization and late stage capitalism both privilege “cheap and quick” over “sustainable and high-quality.”

Last night on our way home from performing in a play, my housemates and I noticed this sleepy little red bat on a city windowsill.

Today we came back to the theater to perform the Sunday matinee and she was on the ground. :(

I scooped her up in a shirt and put her back on the windowsill (never touch a bat with your bare hands). She was still there after the show so now we are taking her to the wildlife rehabber.

The warmth of the car has woken up the bat and it is now trying to escape containment. Thankfully I am stronger than a bat.

This bat is mad as hell about being in rehab

We think she’ll be fine though.

Of course she’s mad you put her ass in the drunk tank
